10 to Watch 2021
Opens Sep 30 2020 12:00 AM (EDT)
Deadline Nov 6 2020 05:00 PM (EST)
Description

Slingshot engages a community of young, Jewish philanthropists to make a lasting impact on the Jewish world and beyond. The “10 to Watch” list builds on our history of showcasing innovative ideas and investing in positive change. The list features young organizations and projects poised to enrich the Jewish future.

The “10 to Watch” list was created to focus the community’s attention on organizations with fresh approaches to current and timely needs. Slingshot works to raise the profile of each organization's work by creating a page on our website, dedicating a month to spotlight their work, including them in social media campaigns, and fostering an on-going partnership as the world continues to change.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must represent an organization or a project of an organization that:

  • Has been actively in the field for a minimum of one year and maximum of five years. Ideas or plans are not eligible; you must be able to demonstrate that you have implemented programs.
  • Serves a North American audience. Global organizations without significant North American activities, beyond fundraising, will not be considered. Fundraising within North America is not considered a significant activity for “10 to Watch.”
  • Is not primarily focused on fundraising.
  • Offers a new, fresh idea for addressing a unique and relevant problem

Application Process
After creating an account, applicants will be asked to fill out an eligibility quiz, based on the requirements listed above. Slingshot will review your answers and notify applicants of the decision within a few business days. Applicants who qualify will then have access to the complete application.

We do ask for some sort of financial documentation to further tell your story. This should be something you already have: an income/expense statement, audited financials, a budget, etc. The application also asks for three references and we suggest including people who can speak to the creativity and power of your work.

All questions have a 300-word limit. Brevity is appreciated. We want this to be as easy as possible, so we encourage you to use language you’ve already written to answer the questions. For example: mission statement from your website, answers used on grant applications, marketing materials, etc. In order to better help you prepare, you can find a PDF of all of the questions here

Deadlines
The Eligibility Quiz must be completed by Friday, November 6 at 5pm EST.

The Application must be completed by November 11 at 5pm EST.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and encourage you to submit as early as possible.

Incomplete Applications: Please ensure that your application is fully completed by these deadlines. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. If you have questions as to whether or not you have submitted fully, please email Rachel at rachel@slingshotfund.org

Selection Process and Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Innovation: Addressing a relevant, strong need in a fresh way. This applies to both what an initiative is doing and how they are doing it, showing a culture of perpetual risk-taking and improvement.
  • Leadership in the Field: Applicants are a model for the field. They may possess a strategy, an approach, or programmatic content that could be replicable elsewhere and/or that is elevating the work of its peer organizations.
  • Potential for Impact or Demonstrated Impact: Applicants can show they are making change in their community, and/or beyond. Or they show promise towards change-making.
  • Excellence in Execution: The product put in the field is of a high quality and caliber.
  • Audience Engagement: Serves its target communities with meaning and relevance and reflects, or is working to reflect, diversity within the Jewish community.

Applications will be evaluated by a committee of reviewers. These individuals are young, Jewish philanthropists and foundation professionals who come from a diversity of backgrounds, life experiences, and expertise. They serve on this committee because they are eager to learn about and support innovation in the Jewish community. They may be unfamiliar with your specific arena, so we encourage you to use your application to also familiarize them with the context of your work.

COVID-19 and the "10 to Watch List"
2020’s unprecedented challenges have led to extraordinary innovation. While we encourage applicants to share how they've pivoted in this moment, transitioning programming to become virtual does not alone meet the standard of innovation we are looking to highlight. We remind applicants that the selection criteria and evaluation process remain the same as our previous list. Should you have questions about whether or not your work would qualify, we invite you to reach out to Rachel Hodes at rachel@slingshotfund.org
